Special considerations for attorneys in Illinois

Applying for your initial real estate broker license based on attorney status? To qualify for an Illinois broker license as an attorney, you must be at least 18 years old and be admitted to practice law by the Illinois Supreme Court.

You can register for the exam by submitting the Illinois Real Estate Examination Registration Form found in the Real Estate Examination Program Candidate HandbookFor approval before you take the exam, the state also requires that you mail a photocopy of your current Illinois attorney registration pocket card certificate to PSI at the address provided on the form.

Attorney Qualification:

To qualify for an Illinois Real Estate Broker’s license under Category C, applicants must: 

1. Be at least 18 years old; and 

2. Be admitted to practice law by the Illinois Supreme Court. 

NOTE: Persons qualifying under Category C MUST register for the examination by submitting the registration form found in this handbook and a photocopy of their current Illinois attorney registration pocket card certificate by mail to PSI at the address provided on the form for approval prior to taking the examination

Attorneys whose ARDC is active and in good standing are ALWAYS exempt from Real Estate Continuing Education.
  1. If you are an attorney with a BROKER LICENSE – license number beginning 475 – you must submit your license renewal form to IDFPR every April of EVEN YEARS and include your renewal payment of $150.00
  2. If you are an attorney with a MANAGING BROKER LICENSE – license number beginning 471 – you must submit your license renewal form to IDFPR every April of ODD YEARS and include your renewal payment of $200.00
